Imran Khan’s Bani Gala property raises some questions

ISLAMABAD: As Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) chairman Imran Khan has revealed his assets, in addition to 14 other of his party leaders, the mystery has further deepened about his Bani Gala estate of 300 kanals and five marlas that he has now declared as a gifted property.

This claim is in contradiction to his previous stand as he said in a December 2011 press conference that he had purchased this land at the rate of Rs0.145 million per kanal.

Imran has spoken in the past and on several occasions claiming that he purchased this land with money borrowed from Jemima Khan, his former wife, and paid the loan after disposing of his flat in London. A 2004 power of attorney of Jemima, in contrast, declared it a Benami transaction, stating the land was purchased in her name and that she returned it after their divorce.

Now a document uploaded on the PTI website has come up with a new disclosure. This is the tax return statement of Imran Khan submitted to the FBR in September 2011. The document says Imran is the exclusive owner of three houses in Lahore and Islamabad, and has shares in another one situated in Mianwali.

At the top of them is mentioned his house located in Zaman Park. The value of the Lahore House has not been mentioned and it has been stated as ‘inherited’. The second is the 300-kanal and 5-marla house at village Mohra Noor Islamabad. Instead of declaring its worth, it has been declared as (gifted).

His 1585-square feet Clara Apartment (No. 8-B-11, Ramna-4, Diplomatic Enclave, G-5, Islamabad) carries a price tag of only Rs1,175,000. The average rent of a two-bedroom apartment there is Rs 50,000. Depreciating property value in the asset declaration of the lawmakers is a common practice that goes unchecked. As a 10-marla house in Mianwali is shared with others and it is inherited, no price value has been declared in the respective column.

While his Bani Gala estate of over 300 kanals has been described as gifted, an adjacent tract of land there measuring six kanals and 16 marlas has been shown as purchased carrying a present value of Rs 5,050,000.

As for the Bani Gala estate’s land is concerned, it has made headlines time and again, and due to the conflicting statements.

In the December 4, 2011 press conference, Imran declared his assets which have been uploaded now. The PTI chairman then said his Bani Gala property was purchased by the money borrowed from Jemima Khan and that it was returned to her after he disposed of his London flat.https://www.thenews.com.pk/archive/print/624725-imran-khan%E2%80%99s-bani-gala-property-raises-some-questions
